Knowledge is power… until it’s not

Don’t get me wrong… I generally abide by the adage that knowledge is power. But sometimes it’s easy to afford knowledge more power than it really has.

The folks who created Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) are part of a professional group called the “Association for Contextual Behavioral Science” (ACBS) The key word here is “contextual”. According to the ACBS, everything we take to be knowledge is dependent upon the context in which our observations are made. This is precisely the point of the classic parable about the blind men and the elephant.

My reflection today is a reminder to not put all of my trust in knowledge. Indeed, perhaps when I go searching for knowledge I should instead just try to readjust my point of view.

As a Catholic, it’s also worth reminding myself that while knowledge can waver, faith does not. What I know – or think I know – is not as important in my life as what I have faith in. Dear God, I place my trust in you.
