“In the beginning” is not only how John’s Gospel starts but Genesis too. Both are reminders that God is timeless. But John also makes the point that God was from the very start accompanied by his Son – the Word through which all things came to be.
Words are inherently powerful. The act of naming something implicitly imposes some aspect of control over it. No wonder then that John uses “Word” – “Logos” in Greek – to describe God’s Son, who is Lord over all creation.
So in this one little passage we are introduced to God, his Word, space, and time itself. Pretty heady stuff, and a perfect way to start this blog!
