Our English word “companion” literally derives from the Latin “cum pane”, meaning “with bread”. Repeatedly in the Gospels, and especially after Easter, we find Jesus sharing meals with his disciples. Sitting down to share a good meal with family and friends is one of the simplest yet most profound of human activities. The food we get in these meals isn’t just what we consume; it’s also the emotional love and support we exchange with each other around the table. Think of all the treasured times we’ve shared with our loved ones, and how many of those took place around a meal. Breaking bread with each other builds bonds that last a lifetime. Jesus knew this keenly, and welcomed opportunities to share meals with his disciples. So as we go about our days, don’t miss out on those chances to invite others to our tables, and join them at theirs. “Come, have breakfast!”
