We recite those “daily bread” words in the Lord’s Prayer all the time, but this morning was the first time I saw something else behind them. “Daily bread” petitions God this day – every day – for the strength we need to do his will. I got it. But today I suppose I was a bit dyslexic and read those words as “bread of the day”, like “soup of the day” or today’s daily special. Hmmm… Maybe the bread God serves is a recipe he baked for us just today. Perhaps today’s bread is patience to cope with a difficult circumstance, peace to manage stress, courage to overcome an obstacle, healing to deal with an illness, forgiveness to share with those who do us harm, or love to overcome hate. Each day brings its own challenges, and the bread God serves is precisely the spiritual nutrition this day calls for.
