I recall Matt telling me that chronic inflammation in the body is something that can promote cancer growth. It’s not hard to find research studies on the web that support this conclusion. What I didn’t know until just recently however, is that inflammation is also a culprit when it comes to depression and anxiety. Typically I would have thought that depression and anxiety are tied to coping with the physical and emotional challenges of cancer. And while no one would argue that, it comes as a surprise to me that there’s an actual biochemical root cause behind all of these conditions which is linked to the immune system. And as I dug deeper I learned something else: many of the drugs that treat depression and anxiety (e.g. SSRIs), actually have an anti-inflammatory effect, and this effect can inhibit the development and growth of cancer. Wow! So the next time you’re feeling depressed and anxious, don’t think it’s all in your head. Talk with your doctor: your body might me telling you something!
